How to take a better LinkedIn headshot at home

Start with light, not equipment

Stand facing a window with indirect daylight. Avoid direct sun across half your face and ceiling lights that cast shadows under your eyes. Move a little farther from the window if highlights lose detail. A plain wall behind you makes it easier to judge the portrait without distractions.

Put the phone near eye level, use a timer and look toward the lens rather than the screen. Leave space above your hair and include your shoulders. Take several frames so you can choose a natural expression instead of relying on one attempt.

Choose clothes that support your role

Wear something you would comfortably wear to meet a colleague or client. A jacket can work well, but it is not mandatory. Solid colors usually draw less attention than large graphics. Check collars, hair and glasses before shooting; these details are harder to correct convincingly later.

Review at avatar size

Shrink the image on your screen. Can you still recognize the face? Is the expression approachable? Does the background compete with you? Choose the frame that passes these checks, not necessarily the most dramatic one. If using AI, compare the result against the source photo and reject changed facial features or inaccurate details.
